Gros Piton Tour

St Lucia is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean. Its stunning natural beauty, world-class beaches, and numerous attractions make it a great option for anyone looking for a relaxing escape to paradise. One of the main attractions of a holiday in St Lucia is a visit to the Pitons, so here are a few things to know before you go.

Overview of the Pitons

The Pitons (which means ‘peaks,’ in French) consist of two volcanic plugs in the southwest of the island, near Soufrière. The larger is called the Gros Piton and the smaller is called the Petit Piton. They stand at 786 meters and739 meters respectively. The Pitons have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and they are one of the most important natural attractions in the Caribbean.

Climbing Gros Piton

Just looking at the Piton is enough for many visitors, but you may want to go further and hike to the top of them during your holiday in St Lucia. If so, your best option is the Gros Piton. It is the higher of the two pitons but it’s actually the easier one to climb. The rules are that you must go with a guide who is employed by the park. This will all be arranged for you when you arrive the small welcome center in the town of Fond Gens Libre, from where you start your hike.

Climbing the Gros Piton can take an entire day to go up and down again, depending on the speed of your hike. For this reason, it is best to start early in the morning so you can get down again before nightfall. It is hard work, but no technical skills are required.

The views become impressive after just a short time hiking, but the view from the top is truly unforgettable. Lookout for Soufriere, and even further away you can see St. Vincent. Maria Island will also be visible in the distance. Make sure you take your camera, wear good footwear, preferably hiking boots, and take plenty of water and sunscreen.

Relax And Recuperate

After all that work hiking, we give you the opportunity to relax and recuperate by spending some time on the beach– you are in the Caribbean after all! You may be a bit stiff the following day, so chill out on one of the many beautiful beaches and enjoy a well-earned rest.

The Gros Pitons are a must-see highlight of any holiday in St Lucia, so make sure you arrange to see them duringyour stay here. The island is a spectacular holiday destination, and there is so much to see, but experiencing thePitons should not be missed.
